"description": "Andrea Mantegna probably authorized Giovanni Antonio da Brescia\u2019s copy of his engraving, the original of which hangs in this gallery. Perhaps unhappy with how his engraved plates had worn from use, Mantegna hired Da Brescia to reengrave several of his compositions. Mantegna\u2019s engraving dates from the 1470s; by 1500, when this copy was made, Da Brescia had better tools and ink, and the use of a roller press, so his impressions are generally sharper and darker than Mantegna\u2019s originals. Da Brescia also employed a \u201creturn stroke,\u201d or zigzag, not used by Mantegna, to create continuous shading on the draperies and legs.",
