Hanna  1924.671-.674\r\n\r\nThe Triumph of Bacchus\r\nBattle of Men and Animals\r\nCombat of the Naked Men\r\nBattle of the Centaurs and the Lapiths\r\n\r\nThe four prints shown here come from a series of twelve known as the\r\nCombats and Triumphs. The friezelike composition reflects the artist's\r\nstudy of marble relief carvings on Greek and Roman sarcophagi (coffins),\r\nhere reduced to a preciously small setting. Against a flat, stagelike\r\nbackground, Delaune's balletic warriors engage in a Mannerist version of\r\nartificial war.\r\n\r\nEtienne Delaune was inspired by the art created at Fontainebleau, but he\r\nworked in Paris and then Strasbourg during the late 1500s. His small,\r\nexquisitely executed engravings reflect his training as a goldsmith and his\r\nwork as a medallist.\r\n\r\n",
