After showing promise as an illustrator in high school, Peets traveled to Paris in 1903, where he studied at the Acad\u00e9mie Julian and the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts under painters such as Jean-L\u00e9on G\u00e9r\u00f4me, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, and Fernand Cormon. Through his courses, he acquired an appreciation for technique above all else and emphasized realism throughout his career. The artist quickly gained recognition for his painting of the Cuyahoga River that was hung in the prestigious Salon des Artistes Fran\u00e7ais of 1913, later followed by his articles about the international role of American art. Peets traveled between Cleveland and France throughout the 1910s, publishing drawings of Senlis Cathedral and the destruction of World War I in The Century magazine. In 1914, he met and married fellow artist Ethel Canby, who was his etching student. After the war, Peets was again taken abroad by a commission for The Hispanic Society of America, which involved creating art to promote interest in Portuguese culture. During this period, he produced a significant volume of work, especially prints. Peets continued to send his work back home to his wife, who entered it in the Cleveland Museum of Art\u2019s May Shows throughout the 1920s. In 1926, he returned to America, and the two lived at the artists\u2019 colony at Woodstock, New York, until differences with artistic direction caused Peets to leave in 1931. The artist worked as a professor at the new Wilmington Academy of Art in Delaware during the Great Depression, eventually transferring to be an instructor at the Rehoboth Art League in 1937. By the 1940s, Peets worked as a professional portrait painter.
