In this image\rof Saint Jerome, D\u00fcrer exploited these\rqualities of drypoint to manifest the natural,\rspiritual realm of the saint\u2019s hermitage in the\rwilderness. Jerome pauses from his studies\rto pray in a setting that buzzes with life. The\rsaint\u2019s isolation and communion with Christ\rresult in spiritual rebirth, symbolized by\rthe bumpy pollard (trimmed) willow, cut to\rgenerate new growth.",
