He began to depict modern modes of transportation and developed an interest in machines and speed. This pastel was created after Severini visited Paris, in 1911, where he admired technological advances such as the Eiffel Tower and the Métro, the city's relatively new public transportation system. Here, he suggests velocity through shifting planes and viewpoints and abruptly juxtaposing word and image. wall description: Modern modes of transportation were a central theme in Severini’s work from 1910 when he joined other artists of the Futurist movement, which embraced the modern city and developed an aesthetic based on the machine and speed. Following a visit to Paris in 1911, Severini began incorporating in his work allusions to the French capital’s technological advances such as the Métro and the Eiffel Tower. A sense of velocity is conveyed here through interpenetrating planes, shifting viewpoints, and abrupt juxtapositions of word and image. Pastel provides punctuated bursts of vivid color in an otherwise monochromatic, urban environment. --- RELATED WORKS --- CITATIONS Fletcher, Valerie J.
