CREATORS

* Viola Gråsten (Swedish, born Finland, 1910–1994)  - designer
Born and trained in Finland at Helsinki’s Centralskolen för Konstflit (now incorporated into Aalto University), Gråsten immigrated to Sweden in 1944. Prior to her relocation, Gråsten worked for the Finska Handarbetets Vänner (Friends of Finnish Handicraft). In Sweden, Gråsten was initially employed by Elsa Gullberg’s firm to design traditional Finnish rya rugs. She designed for Nordiska Kompaniet from 1949 until 1956 when she transitioned to the artistic head of fashion textiles at Mölnlycke Väfveri where she stayed until 1973. Gråsten won numerous prestigious design awards throughout her career, including gold medals at the 1939 Paris World’s Fair and 1951 Milan Triennial.
* Nordiska Kompaniet (Swedish, est. 1902)  - manufacturer
Josef Sachs established the department store Nordiska Kompaniet in 1902. The store’s first building opened in 1915 on Hamngaten in Stockholm and is still in operation today.
