Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (10/15/2016 – 1/15/2017): "Fra Bartolommeo: The Divine Renaissance" --- PROVENANCE Probably from a large group of drawings left by Fra Bartolommeo to Fra Paolino da Pistoia (c. 1490-1547), convent of San Marco, Florence; possibly bequeathed by Fra Paolino to Sister Plautilla Nelli (1523-1588), convent of Santa Caterina, Florence (the bird in the lower left, recto, in brown ink is probably the bird Monbeig-Goguel considered to be the collector's mark of Suor Platilla Nelli; see Monbeig-Goguel 1991, 453; for the Platilla Nelli provenance, see also Sotheby's sales catalogue 1957 and Fischer 1989); purchased from the convent of Santa Caterina in 1725 by Cavaliere Francesco Maria Nicolò Gabburri, Florence; William Kent, London. Purchased for private collection in Ireland in 1925; [sold, Sotheby's, London, 20 November 1957, no. 3]. date: footnotes: citations: --- fun fact: digital description: wall description: In 1957 a group of 41 sheets depicting landscapes by Fra Bartolommeo, one of the most influential artists of the Italian Renaissance, appeared on the art market. The discovery was significant. They are among the first works of Western art dedicated completely to nature-landscapes for their own sake, without suggestion of biblical or historical narrative. The rapidity and regularity of strokes used for the evergreen and deciduous trees and the sweeping lines in the foreground suggest that the landscape in Farmhouse on the Slope of a Hill was done directly from nature. --- RELATED WORKS --- CITATIONS The Cleveland Museum of Art.
