During his lifetime, Shubun served as an official artist for the Ashikaga shoguns and Shokokuji, the Kyoto temple at which he was a priest. He was a remarkable sculptor as well as a versatile painter of landscape, flower-and-bird, and Buddhist subjects. Along with folding screens and hanging scrolls, he is also recorded to have excecuted paintings on sliding partitions.",
