        "description": "In 1920 Kirchner published the essay \u201c\u00dcber Kirchners Graphic\u201d (On Kirchner\u2019s Prints) under the alias Louis de Marsalle, in which \u201cde Marsalle\u201d described Kirchner\u2019s process of working on copper plates outdoors. To make small etchings such as this, he would \u201ctake the plates with him without difficulty to make the first under-drawing directly from nature. Thus the etching contained . . . the most immediate hieroglyphs.\u201d The directness of the resulting etching was for Kirchner like a daily diary that recorded his encounters with nature and its endless forms.",
