fun fact:
Look closely! One of this fashionable woman's feet is peeking out from under her layered kimono.
digital description:
Figures like this were a prevalent type of Kakiemon ware and may have derived from dolls formed in the likeness of courtesans dressed in elaborate brocades.
wall description:
This woman’s red lips, white skin, black hair, and sash were considered the height of beauty in her time. Her fashionable, brightly colored garment was created by brushing enamel onto pre-fired porcelain. This colorful, floral aesthetic was characteristic of Kakiemon ware, a type of ceramic produced in the village of Arita. Located near the port of Imari, ceramics from Arita were exported to Europe via Dutch traders, but were also popular among Japanese collectors.
