CREATORS
* John Launois (American, 1928–2002) - artist
John Launois American, b. France, 1928-
Photojournalist John Launois cites as his major influences photographer Joe Pazen and Howard Chapnick, former president of Black Star Agency, where Launois worked exclusively as a freelance photographer. He contributed regularly to such magazines as the Saturday Evening Post, Life, National Geographic, Newsweek, and Fortune.
In 1960 Launois gained fame for traveling to the Soviet Union to do a story for Life, "The Trans-Siberian Express" (June 1960). Well received for its journalistic excellence, this photo essay marked the first time a Western journalist had been allowed in Siberia since 1945. For his photographs of the Tasaday people of southern Mindanao, published in National Geographic as "The Tasaday, A True Stone Age Tribe" (August 1972), Launois received the World Understanding Award from the University of Missouri School of Journalism (1973). His photo essay "50 Years of Communism" was published in the Saturday Evening Post (October 1967).
In addition to his work in photography, Launois has also produced films and mixed-media presentations. Currently living in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, he works on magazine and corporate assignments throughout the world. A.W.
