Ernst Halberstadt American, b. Germany, 1910-1987
Skilled also as a painter and sculptor, Ernst Halberstadt was a self-taught photographer. He worked as an assistant to painters Ezra Winters (1932) and Diego Rivera (1933). Halberstadt taught drawing and painting at Massachusetts Maritime Academy (1974) and photography at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina (1973). Among his awards were a painting fellowship from the New England Area Pepsi-Cola Competition (1946) and a medal from the Art Directors Club of Boston (1956). Halberstadt published two books, Shore Road to Ogunquit (1969) and Rites of Spring (1973). A.W.
