Irving A. Achorn (born in Mattadoisett, Massachusetts) has a diverse artistic background. After interrupting his studies at Pratt Institute in New York to serve for four years in the U.S. Army, he returned to complete a degree in industrial design (1948). Upon graduation, he worked commercially in various New York design studios, then moved to Ohio to teach at the Akron Art Institute Professional School of Design (which later became the Akron Art Museum). During that time, he also studied ceramics at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and earned B.S. and M.A. degrees in design from Kent State University (1954, 1955). Achorn organized and initiated the commercial art program at the University of Akron when he became professor there in 1965. He retired from his post in 1984 and moved to New Harbor, Maine. Frequently included in the Cleveland Museum of Art's annual May Show, a regional juried exhibition, from 1964-78, Achorn earned recognition for his multilayered, psychological portrait Michael Murphy (1965). Achorn died in 2011. --- measurements: Image: 21.4 x 17.4 cm (8 7/16 x 6 7/8 in.); Matted: 50.8 x 40.6 cm (20 x 16 in.) state of the work: edition of the work: support materials: inscriptions: --- CURRENT EXHIBITIONS title: The May Show: 48th Annual Exhibition of Works by Artists and Craftsmen of The Western Reserve opening date: 1966-04-20T05:00:00 The May Show: 48th Annual Exhibition of Works by Artists and Craftsmen of The Western Reserve.
