"inscription_translation": "Artist's inscription, signature, and 2 seals on Leaf 8 (previously leaf H), 1966.31.8:\n\nAlong the stream there were forty-nine bends.\nWhere we searched out the Qinhuai\u2019s wonders over six dynasties.\nAs snow clearing in the Eastern Hill, who came wearing wooden clogs?\nAs wind blowing high in the Western Ravine, who allowed the poem to complete itself?\nLet us take pity on the cold solitary [plum], devoid of any companions.\nWith only a few branches remaining [as viewed from the boat].\nThe falling flowers fill the ground while Spring is yet to end.\nA soured heart, tight as a bean, can endure lasting thoughts. \n\nMaster Zhongbin sent me ten pieces of Song paper while I was in Zhenzhou [Yizheng \u5100\u5fb5, a city southwest of Yangzhou] and requested paintings from me. I recalled those places in Qinhuai where we got together in search of blossoming plums. I painted these [leaves] to seek his advice. [Signed] Shitao Ji Daoren of Qingxiang. [seals] Yuanji; Shitao.",

"description": "This album leaf was probably created in 1695 for a friend Shitao had traveled with to visit ancient sites along the Qinhuai River from the Six Dynasties period. A tiny figure in a boat looks up in awe toward rising mountain masses that form an overhanging cliff, perhaps an image for the overwhelming history of Nanjing.
Shitao was born two years before the Ming dynasty fell. A descendant of the first Ming emperor, he later lived in Nanjing, Yangzhou, and Anhui province. Despite his affiliation with the Ming imperial family, he met the Qing dynasty Kangxi emperor twice.",
