digital description:
The Ogata brothers Kōrin and Kenzan often collaborated on ceramics. This dish is one of a set used for serving tea cakes. Kenzan shaped the dish, after which Kōrin drew the iron oxide design of plovers, a type of shorebird, flying over waves. Kenzan then covered the object with a clear glaze and fired it. Kōrin placed his signature next to his design, while Kenzan signed the back.
wall description:
Brothers Kenzan and Korin collaborated on many artistic endeavors. Kenzan especially contributed many original designs to the repertory of Edo period ceramics. This serving dish is one of a set used for displaying tea cakes. The design of plovers flying over waves derives from Heian period (900s–1100s) literature and later lacquerware designs. It was freely drawn by Korin in iron oxide, after which the dish was covered with a clear glaze.
