"description": "Silver fulfilled a prominent role in projecting wealth, status, power, and ritual in British life during the 1600s and 1700s. Elaborate forms such as this trophy, with its swags of flowers, neoclassical rosettes, acanthus spears, and acorn finial, not only represented wealth in its sheer silver weight but also provided royal and aristocratic owners a surface for displaying engraved coats of arms. Engraved on one side of this trophy cup can be found the arms of Robert Grosvenor (1767\u20131845), the first Marquess of Westminster, and Lady Eleanor Egerton (1770\u20131846), whom he married in 1794, a year after the trophy\u2019s completion. The other side depicts preparations for a horserace, the most culturally significant leisure activity enjoyed by aristocratic families in the 1700s. Grosvenor owned a number of famous horses and was likely awarded this trophy following a successful race.",

"biography": "Peter Bateman, second son of Hester Bateman, bon 1740. Apprenticed to Richard Clarke, husband of his sister Letitia. Married first, Elizabeth Beaver (widow) 1763, and second Sarah - 1776. Lived at 86 Bunhill Row. First mark entered in partnership with Jonathan, 7 December 1790, and six further marks on 9 December. On Jonathan's death entered mark with Ann and William, January 1800. \r\nFourth mark with William, 8 November 1805. Probably retired in 1815 on entry of William Bateman's single mark. He died 19 November 1825, leaving in his will \u00a350 each to the Evangelical Institution at Newport Pagnall and the Baptist Academy, Stepney. In 1805 he gave a chandelier to the Meeting House at Newport Pagnall, whose minister William Bull, intimate of the poet Cowper, was a friend of the goldsmith and whose son, the Rev. T. B. Bull married Letitia, daughter of Jonathan and Ann Bateman.",
