"description": "In the Netherlands, Hendrick Goltzius radically altered the engraver\u2019s formulas for producing shape, volume, and tone. Building on Cornelis Cort\u2019s and Agostino Carracci\u2019s formulas, he used swelled, crossed lines that end at the figure\u2019s outline. He interspersed the diamond shapes on Apollo\u2019s body with dots to convey the transition from dark to light\u2014effective for portraying the Sun God\u2019s exaggerated musculature, a hallmark of Goltzius\u2019s work. The S curve, a mark used by Albrecht D\u00fcrer, is now swelled to follow the complicated, swirling volume of clouds.",
