During the 1920s-30s he took part in several photographic salons, including the Fourth National Salon of Pictorial Photography sponsored by the Buffalo Camera Club (1924), the Eighth International Salon of Photography organized by the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles (1924), and the Twelfth Annual Pittsburgh Salon of Photographic Art (1925). In 1933 he exhibited at the Century of Progress International Photographic Salon sponsored by the Chicago Camera Club. Gilchrist also participated in several May Shows (1922, 1923, 1931, 1932, 1939), regional juried exhibitions sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art, receiving an honorable mention for his photographs in 1939.
