"description": "The exquisite handling of the pastel, crisp and colorful in the foreground while of the greatest subtlety in the atmospheric distance, bears out Pillement's reputation as the best 18th-century French artist of the pastel landscape. Landscapes in this period were most often picturesque creations, rather than literal transcriptions of nature. In this dramatically irregular countryside, shepherds, flocks, and rustic buildings create an air of idealized rural charm.",

"biography": "In the early part of his career, he worked as a textile designer at the Gobelins factory, and as a decorative painter in Spain and Portugal. He eventually moved to London, where in 1755 he published the first of many books of Chinoiserie designs. However, he was most well-known for his prints of flowers. His popularity waned significantly when Rococo design fell out of fashion at the end of the century.",
