His early black-and-white images and more recent color work (since 1976) address the relationship between photography and American culture. Among his award-winning critical anthologies are Camera Work: A Critical Anthology (1973) and The Snapshot (1974). His American Photography: A Critical Anthology 1945-1980 (1984), named Nikon Book of the Year in 1984, remains one of the most important references for contemporary photographic practice and theory. He has exhibited widely, and his photographs have appeared in such publications as Aperture, L'Oeil, and The New Yorker. Green (born in Troy, New York) attended Brandeis University (B.A. in English literature, 1963), during which time he also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He was a Danforth Fellow, earning an M.A. in English literature from Harvard University (1967). After graduating, he worked with Ezra Stoller (1967-68) and taught at mit (1968-76), where together with Minor White he initiated the Creative Photography Laboratory, later serving as director. Green has acted as editorial consultant and associate editor for Aperture magazine (1972-76) and as editorial consultant and writer for Oxford University Press (1977-82) and Harry N. Abrams (1982-85). Green has also taught in the department of photography and cinema at Ohio State University (1976-90), where he was the founding director of the Wexner Center of the Arts. He currently holds joint appointments in the departments of studio art and art history at the University of California, Riverside, where he also serves as director of the California Museum of Photography.
