        "description": "Goltzius situates his flagellation scene in an\rurban setting, rather than an open landscape; the\rcompressed space serves to intensify the action.\rBound tightly to a tall column, Jesus is whipped\rby two men, the one on the left wielding a leather\rwhip tipped with barbs; the one on the right with\rbundled birch branches. Jesus\u2019s body is powerfully\rmuscled, but his face is anguished and gaunt. This\rengraving was included in a series of 12 prints\rby Goltzius illustrating the Passion of Christ,\rextremely popular during the artist\u2019s lifetime and\rbeyond, and inspiring many copies.",
