His images address issues of replication and appropriation, particularly as they apply to the study of art history and visual culture. His work is included in the anthology One of a Kind: Recent Polaroid Color Photography (1979) and in Cultural Artifacts (1979), Fabricated to be Photographed (1980), and The Photography of Invention (1989). Schrager (born in Bethesda, Maryland) holds degrees from Harvard University (B.A. in history, 1972), and Florida State University (M.F.A. in photography, 1975). He was the director of the short-lived but influential Light Gallery (1975-78) and has taught at both New York University and the School of the Visual Arts, New York (1978). His awards include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (1980) and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (1993), as well as a MacDowell Colony President Fellowship (1981). Schrager's work has been shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1979), George Eastman House, Rochester (1981), and the Rhode Island School of Design (1986). He lives in New York.
