This auction was organized by the Belgian royal family to benefit l’Oeuvre Nationale de Service Social aux Familles de Militaires.  The catalogue’s preface, written by Princess Jean de Mérode, indicates that the objects in the auction were donated by various collectors, connoisseurs, and philanthropists, although these individuals are not identified in the catalogue.

The Piccoli collection may be that of Giuseppe Piccoli, a collector who lived in Venice.  The museum’s records originally listed Piccoli later in the provenance – in between the 1927 Galerie Georges Giroux sale and the 1941 Galerie Fievez sale.  However, this chronology seems incorrect: If Giuseppe Piccoli is indeed the Piccoli in question, he could not have purchased it at the 1927 sale, since he had died in 1924. Furthermore, the geographical trajectory indicated by the museum’s original provenance (Belluno/Brussels/Venice/Brussels) is less logical than a provenance in which the painting went from Belluno to Venice, and then to Brussels for a longer, uninterrupted period of time.  Verification of this new proposed provenance is ongoing.”

The individual who commissioned the painting is unknown, as is the original location of the chapel, which secondary sources have not identified, but have cited as since demolished.
