"description": "Andrea Mantegna probably made this print for the founding of the Church of Sant\u2019Andrea (1472) in Mantua, Italy, which housed a relic of Christ\u2019s blood. Christ stands between Saint Longinus, who brought the relic to Mantua, and Saint Andrew, who discovered its burial place. Mantegna was among the first Italian painters to create engravings of his own design. The engraving\u2019s parallel, diagonal hatching, bold outlines, soft brownish ink, and subtle transitions mimic his pen-and-ink drawings. Some slight unevenness, seen in the background lines, may be the result of Mantegna\u2019s use of a hand-held roller instead of a press.",
