CREATORS
* Edd A. Ruggles (American, 1880–1940) - artist
Edd A. Ruggles (born in Newburgh, Ohio) first worked as an architect before becoming the staff photographer of the Cleveland Museum of Art. After attending the Armour Institute in Chicago, Ruggles practiced architecture in Cleveland from 1904-16. He was hired by the museum shortly before its formal opening in 1916. During his 25-year association with the museum, Ruggles also pursued his own work, photographing in Ohio, New England, and Great Britain. In 1931 his photographs of English architecture appeared in the book Small Stone Houses of the Cotswold District. During the early years of his photographic career, Ruggles also participated in a number of May Shows, regional juried exhibitions sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art, winning several first and second prizes between 1919-26.
Additionally, Ruggles was married to the Head of the Extensions department, Ruth K. Field Ruggles. When combined, they gave over 50 years of service to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Their joint memorial gift continues to benefit the Ingalls Library to this day.
