Armenia, 1908- At age 16 Yousuf Karsh emigrated from Armenia to Canada with the assistance of his uncle George Nakash. After working in his uncle's Montreal photographic portrait studio (1926-28), Karsh studied several years with photographer John H. Garo in Boston (1928-31). In 1932 he returned to Canada and opened his own studio in Ottawa. Three years later he was appointed official portrait photographer of the Canadian government and in 1941 achieved international fame with his Life cover portrait of Winston Churchill. Numerous celebrity portraits followed: Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Casals, Queen Elizabeth II. He became a Canadian citizen in 1946. Over the years Karsh has continued to travel the world photographing famous individuals, always seeking to capture, he explains, "the mind and soul of the personality before my camera." Karsh's work has been featured in numerous books and one-person exhibitions, including retrospectives at the International Center of Photography, New York (1983) and the Flint (Michigan) Institute of Art (1984); he has also received many honors over his long career, including the Medal of Service of the Order of Canada (1968), an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society, London (1970), a U.S. Presidential Citation (1971), and honorary degrees from nine Canadian and American universities. Karsh lives in Ottawa, Ontario.
