He specialized in views of great estates and depictions of the yachts and other vessels that animated Newport's harbor. In the 1890s Lincoln began an extensive series on wildflowers that continued for more than 20 years, resulting in his magnum opus Wild Flowers of New England (1904, revised 1914). He reportedly brought his wildflower subjects carefully indoors in order to make lengthy exposures without wind. He also photographed orchids, landscapes, and trees. Lincoln's technique was unusually direct for an era in which manipulated prints were the norm. This ties him to the American Arts and Crafts movement, which emphasized simplicity in design. Several of Lincoln's photographs appeared in the March 1915 issue of The Craftsman, edited and published by furniture maker Gustav Stickley.
