His subjects have included landscapes, domestic scenes, and stills, with a particular emphasis on the small towns and countryside of his native English midlands. Born in Ludlow, Shropshire, Hill taught himself photography while a pupil at Oswestry Boys' High School (1955-58). He worked for his local newspaper, the Border Counties Advertiser (1959-61), and as a reporter and columnist for the Express and Star news agencies in England and throughout Europe (1962-65). Through 1974, Hill used his wife's Rolleiflex and continued to work freelance for various magazines and newspapers, including the London Observer, Telegraph Magazine, Financial Times, Radio Times, New Society, Manchester Guardian, Birmingham Post, Evening Mail, and bbc-tv. Hill has lectured in photojournalism at Trent Polytechnic (1971-74) and taught at Sheffield Polytechnic and Derby Longdale College of Higher Education. Since 1976 he has conducted workshops and acted as founder-director of A Photographers' Place in Derbyshire. He has served as member of the Arts Council of Great Britain (1977-80), secretary for the Society for Photographic Education, and president of the West Midlands Arts Commission (1974-75) and lectured on several occasions for bbc-tv (1976-79) on topics related to photography. Hill has also collaborated on several publications, including Dialogue with Photography with Thomas Cooper (1979) and Approaching Photography with foreword by Aaron Schaarf (1982). He was elected Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (1990), named Member of the Order of the British Empire (1994), and has received an East Midlands Arts Commission award (1980) and a major grant from the Hasselblad Foundation, Sweden (1993). Hill lives in his native Derbyshire.
