"description": "Brett Weston took his first photograph in 1925 following brief instructions from his father, the avant-garde photographer Edward Weston. Two years later, Brett was working with Edward in his portrait studio in Glendale, California, and exhibiting his own fine art photographs. When Brett made this image in 1936, he was living in San Francisco on a $90-per-month stipend from the Works Progress Administration\u2019s Federal Arts Project, producing sculpture and \u201ccreative photography.\u201d The following year, Brett obtained commercial assignments, including jobs for Kodak and Holiday magazine, \u201cbut I did them badly. I was eager to try, because it was bread and butter, but I just couldn\u2019t compromise.\u201d",

"biography": "Brett Weston (born in Los Angeles) was the second son of well-known American photographer Edward Weston. After learning photography from his father and working in his father's studio, in 1930 Weston set up his own studio in Santa Barbara. Two years later he was invited to exhibit in the first Group f/64 show at the M. H. de Young Museum in San Francisco. During World War II Weston was stationed in New York, where he served as an army photographer. In 1947 he received a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to photograph along the East Coast. The following year he returned to California to assist with the care of his father and with making prints from his father's negatives. In the 1960s Weston began a series of trips to photograph in Europe, Baja California, Japan, and Hawaii, and in 1973 a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts allowed him to photograph in Alaska. Throughout his long career, Weston often worked with a large-format camera, creating sharp, detailed images that focused on his subjects' abstract, formal elements, such as texture, form, pattern, and tone.
