After a brief stay in New York City in late 1929, Coster moved to Chicago in 1930 and established himself as a commercial photographer. He worked for several studios, then opened his own, including among his clients Marshall Field & Company. In the late 1930s he turned to photojournalism, becoming associated with Life magazine, and in the next decade began teaching at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago. Although his participation became more limited, Coster continued to show his work and during the 1950s was included in two exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: Memorable Life Photographs (1951) and The Family of Man (1955), both organized by Edward Steichen.
