Also to : CMA, February 15 - April 23, 1995. Given following CMA venue --- PROVENANCE --- fun fact: This elaborate base may have originally supported an ornate lamp (not the statuette now displayed atop it). digital description: This unusual tripod base features three clawed feet, an abundance of vegetal ornament, and three different figural scenes in low relief. Two seem to show sanctuary settings: first, a small Archaistic statue of Athena flanked by a woman with small offerings and a man holding a kid and leading two goats; and second, a small youthful male statue behind two beardless figures—perhaps Apollo, with a stag, and Dionysos, holding a thyrsos. The third scene shows Herakles, holding a club while leading a woman, maybe Auge or Alcestis. Although perhaps similarly eclectic in style, the base and the sculpture it now supports differ in their alloys and patinas. wall description: The bronze figure of Dionysos, the god of wine, the theater, and the mysteries, is presented in a style recalling Archaic Greek art, most noticeably in the stiff pose and trimmed beard. The disk attached at the top of the head suggests that this figure was once part of an ornate piece of furniture. The base was not originally designed to support the figure. --- RELATED WORKS id: 159298 Statuette of Dionysos, 50 BC-AD 50. Italy, Roman, 1st Century BC-1st Century.
