His interest in the modern landscape began in 1980, when he produced nighttime exposures of car headlights and the neon lights of the city. Shibata (born in Tokyo) has also traveled throughout his native country to photograph concrete structures used for channeling water and preventing soil erosion in Japan's mountainous terrain. In black and white, he presents the puzzling jigsaw-like fabrications as both echoing the earth's natural undulations and impeding its forces. By maintaining a distance from his subjects, Shibata neither celebrates nor criticizes, but rather investigates. Shibata attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (B.A., 1972; M.F.A., 1974) and continued his education at the Royal Academie of Ghent, Belgium (1975-77). His awards include fellowships from the Ministry of National Education and Dutch Culture, Belgium (1975, 1976) and the Asahi Shimbun Publishing Company (1992). He lives in Kamakura City, Japan.
