"inscription_translation": "Artist's inscription, signature, and 3 seals:\n\nWhite powder and rouge make a perfect morning appearance.\n[The flowers] are rich in color but restrained in fragrance.\nThe east wind is reluctant to aid its full growth.\nCompared to the plum blossoms, each carries its own sad tune.\n\nOn a spring day in the gengshen year of the Hongzhi era [1500], I was at Shuang\u2019e [twin-moth] monks' residence where crab apples are blooming abundantly. Mr. Lu Ruqi was also visiting then, and asked for a painting of mine, so I painted this to express my feelings. Shen Zhou of Changzhou [seal] Qi nan. [2 seals, lower left corner] Shi tian; Bai shi weng.",

"description": "Shen Zhou painted a broken branch (zhezhi \u6298\u679d) of crab apple, a fragment of nature rather than the full plant in its natural context. Shen uses calligraphic outlines in pure ink to depict the flower petals. The swift yet precise brushstrokes together with the slight S-shaped branch convey vitality.
The inscription is a poem written by the artist, commenting on the lovely color and melancholic aura of the crab apple blossom. Shen Zhou is the founder of the Wu School, a group of scholars and officials active around Suzhou in eastern China, known for practicing painting and calligraphy in a refined and elegant style.",
