fun fact:
The triangular perforations in this statuette’s base give an impression of translucence, perhaps alluding to water.
digital description:
Cast using the lost-wax process, this bronze horse with perforated stand is conceived in profile, its balanced and stylized forms designed for clarity and legibility. Among thousands of bronze animal figurines produced across the Greek world in the Geometric period, this example stands out for its intact condition and large size. Although lacking a known findspot, its form suggests that it may have been produced in a Corinthian workshop.
wall description:
This cast bronze horse was produced by a Corinthian workshop. Just over 60 examples are known from this workshop tradition. Among this group, this statuette is one of the most outstanding. At 11.5 centimeters in height, it is also one of the largest Corinthian horses, and is also completely intact. Conceived in profile, the horse's form has been abstracted and balanced in a wonderful proportional harmony that appears strikingly modern. Cast using the lost-wax process, this bronze horse on a perforated stand has balanced proportions and radically stylized formal elements designed for clarity and legibility.
