The Marquis de Lagoy (1764-1829) of Aix-en-Provence had a splendid collection of more than 3,000 drawings by more than 800 different artists of all periods and schools. It is known that he had an agent in Rome buying for him in the 1790s. The drawing is inscribed on the mount: "Acheté a Roma." His mark appears at lower center in black ink.
