During his early career he was closely associated with Watteau, many of whose paintings he engraved. Boucher was a successful and incredibly prolific artistic who had a major impact on both fine and decorative art of the 18th century. He is particularly noted for having reinvented the genre of the pastoral, creating images of shepherds and shepherdesses as sentimental lovers that was taken up in a variety of medium. Boucher's sketchy manner of painting helped to promote painterliness as an end in itself. This trend dominated French painting until the emergence of Neoclassicism, when the tides of criticism turned against Boucher and his followers. --- measurements: Overall: 30.1 x 37.1 cm (11 7/8 x 14 5/8 in.) state of the work: edition of the work: support materials: description: cream laid paper, laid down on cream laid paper watermarks: inscriptions: inscription: verso, upper left, in graphite: M; center right, in graphite: [c--c 2ff?] [sideways]; lower right, in graphite: [illegible, partially erased inscription four lines long]; lower center, in graphite: M[illegible]; lower right, in graphite: pr cadre translation: remark: --- CURRENT EXHIBITIONS title: A Painting in Focus: Jean-Bernard Restout's Sleep and the French Royal Academy opening date: 1999-03-14T00:00:00 A Painting in Focus: Jean-Bernard Restout's Sleep and the French Royal Academy.
