"conservation_statement": "The 19 slats of this fan are composed of mother-of-pearl that is only as thick as a quarter. The slats were created from multiple pieces, and the skillful joins are visible only under magnification. Drilled and cut holes in the mother-of-pearl impart a lacy design and make the material even more fragile. The inherent delicacy led to numerous breaks and repairs over the fan's lifetime, including a recent break along a previous repair. After lengthy study and materials testing, the conservator chose to adhere Mylar, a thin, transparent, stable, polyester film to the reverse. This nearly invisible and reversible repair provides strength while allowing the fan to be viewed as originally intended.",
