Before taking up photography, Lynes published a series of literary pamphlets featuring short works by Gertrude Stein, René Crevel, and Ernest Hemingway under the name "As Stable Productions." In 1927 he began experimenting with photography and the next year exhibited his work in his bookstore in Englewood, New Jersey. He continued to photograph, concentrating on portraiture and surrealistic still lifes, and in 1933 opened a studio in New York City. Lynes's portraits of well-known literary and artistic figures and members of the American Ballet Company helped establish his career. By the late 1930s his photographs were appearing in Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and Town and Country magazines, and his clients included Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman department stores. In 1945-46 he moved to California to oversee Vogue's Hollywood studio. Returning to New York in 1948, Lynes continued to photograph fashion and to make studies of the male nude figure until his death.
