She described finding her\rearliest artistic inspiration in drawings of creatures\rmade for her by her father on the reservation where\rshe spent her childhood. Smith explored the subject\rhere using lithography, her preferred printmaking\rtechnique because of the loose and painterly lines\rit can create. Her composition focuses on a coyote and\rcrane, both important symbols within her tribe\rand its tradition of storytelling, the former for its\rtrickery and the latter for its leadership.",
