One of five children of immigrant parents, he grew up in a three-room cold-water flat in one of the tenement buildings that filled New York’s Lower East Side. Because apartments were crowded, much of life was lived on the street, providing ample material for his camera. wall description: Taken when Walter Rosenblum was 19, these images depict a world he knew intimately: street life on the Lower East Side. One of five children of Jewish immigrants, Rosenblum grew up in a three-room tenement flat without hot running water not far from Pitt Street. He understood the desire to exchange stuffy, overcrowded apartments for the fresher, cooler air of the street. Rosenblum is one of many photographers in this exhibition who belonged to the Photo League, whose members sought to bring about social change through photography. --- RELATED WORKS --- CITATIONS Tannenbaum, Barbara. “A New York Minute: Take a look at street photography between 1920 and 1950.” Cleveland Art: Cleveland Museum of Art Members Magazine 61, no. 2 (Spring 2021): 24-26. page number: Reproduced: P. 25. url: --- IMAGES
