He worked as a freelance graphic artist and photographer and then as a staff photographer and designer for Graphis Publishing House. In the 1940s he continued to freelance, contributing pictures to Du and Life magazines and photographing for the Swiss postwar relief organization in Italy and Greece (1946-47). In 1949 he joined magnum Photos, taking assignments for such publications as Epoca, Paris-Match, Life, and Fortune. Deeply sympathetic to the suffering he witnessed after World War II, Bischof committed himself to recording the plight of humans around the world. He photographed in India (documenting the famine in 1951), Korea, Indochina (covering the war), Europe, Mexico, South America, and Japan, where he made a series of photographs during a year-long stay. In 1954 he was killed in a road accident while on assignment in Peru.
