United States Marine Corps Boot Camp: The "Shock Treatment" is what the Marines call the way they induce obedience into the recruits. They do it quickly and violently and perhaps cruelly--but purposefully. As soon as the recruit has been issued his uniforms and processed through administration, he and the other new recruits form a platoon and are given over to their permanent "drill instructor." Then, with screaming and cursing and harassment, the drill instructors endeavor to break down individuality, self-motivated behavior, and mental resistance until the recruits are numbly obedient.
