Plate Distortion III belongs to a series that she created by folding and bending a thin sheet of copper foil covered in grainy aquatint. The material was then affixed to a sturdier plate and printed, so that the effects of Auerbach’s manipulation became the image itself, referencing the history and experimental potential of printmaking materials and tools. wall description: For more than a decade, Tauba Auerbach has sought ways to represent volume and space through two-dimensional processes, such as printmaking. This work belongs to a series that she made by covering lightweight copper foil in powdery resin. With heat, the material adhered to the surface of the foil. Auerbach applied corrosive acid, which bit the exposed surface and created a tonal pattern. She folded, bent, and flattened the foil and then affixed it to a plate. After inking and printing, the effects of Auerbach’s manipulation—which vaguely resembled creased drapery or abstract landscape—became the image itself. --- RELATED WORKS --- CITATIONS --- IMAGES
