digital description:
From top to bottom this scroll features various generations of ancestors with men on the right and women on the left, 30 figures altogether. Inscribed tablets give their rank and relation within the family. Square badges on their robes indicate each figure's rank as an official. Scrolls of this type were displayed for worship at home during the New Year celebrations.
wall description:
This scroll features various generations of ancestors, 31 figures altogether including a servant. As men could marry several wives, there are 13 men (right) and 17 women (left). Inscribed tablets give their rank and relation within the family. The bottom row contains the most recent generation and the figure on the right might have commissioned the painting. The frontal orientation is a standard feature in ancestor portraits. Scrolls of this type were displayed for worship at home during New Year celebrations and other occasions.
Square badges on court robes indicate the figure’s rank as an official. The wives of court officials would wear the same rank badge.
