In 1927 she moved to New York City, learning the basics of photography during a brief stint in Ralph Steiner's photography department at Delineator magazine. From 1930-36 she worked in the city as a freelance fashion and advertising photographer. During a 1935 trip to California, Bernhard met Edward Weston, whose work she greatly admired. The following year she moved to Santa Monica to study with Weston; by this time, however, he had moved north to settle in Carmel. Bernhard decided to stay in southern California, where she lived and worked as a freelance photographer for the next 17 years. In 1953 she moved to San Francisco, her current home. During the 1960s-70s Bernhard instructed at Utah State University and the University of California Extension, Berkeley and San Francisco. She works primarily in black and white with a viewfinder camera, specializing in nudes, natural forms, and still lifes. M.M.",
