The artist traveled on foot to capture the present state of the buildings after a long and protracted war with Spain. He used large sheets of paper and combined ink wash and charcoal, capturing the buildings on the spot and then embellishing each with landscape elements. wall description: After a prolonged war between the Netherlands and Spain, Roelant Roghman made around 250 drawings featuring castles, manor houses, and fortresses while traveling by foot around the Netherlands, probably a commission to represent the present state of the buildings. Roghman drew each structure on the spot and added landscape elements later in his studio. His open-air drawing and eye-level views were innovative at the time, and stand as early documents in the history of topography. North of Utrecht, the Zuylen Castle (built 1500s, destroyed 1944) was surrounded by water on three sides. He drew the Huis ‘t Sant as he made his way along the seashore. The1300s structure had been destroyed during a siege in 1420 and was little more than a ruin when Roghman recorded it. --- RELATED WORKS --- CITATIONS --- IMAGES web: https://openaccess-cdn.clevelandart.org/2020.142/2020.142_web.jpg print: https://openaccess-cdn.clevelandart.org/2020.142/2020.142_print.jpg full: https://openaccess-cdn.clevelandart.org/2020.142/2020.142_full.tif
