"description": "Contemporary artist Zeng Xiaojun is known for depicting tree trunks and rocks in draftsman-like fashion in the traditional Chinese medium of ink and paper. Inspired by a small, 11th-century Song dynasty dish in the artist\u2019s own collection, Poetic Pattern of Song Ware is unusual in subject matter. Fascinated by the dish\u2019s contrasting black and beige clay marbling, Zeng made an ink drawing of a graphic, abstract design on a monumental scale. The rendering of the marbling in lobed sections creates a unique three-dimensional effect and rhythm, not seen in the small dish CMA 2020.187.",

"biography": "Born in Beijing in 1954, Zeng Xiaojun graduated from the Central Art and Craft Academy of Fine Arts in 1981. Two years later, he moved to the United States and lived for the next fourteen years in Boston, where he exhibited and taught until 1997. While in America, his deep connoisseurship in classical Chinese furniture and objects of the traditional scholar\u2019s studio developed. He collects antique furniture, scholar\u2019s rocks, and fantastical roots, which the Chinese literati have long prized, and these traditionally prized objects become subjects of his ink paintings. Zeng Xiaojun continues the tradition of Chinese ink paintings but reinvigorates and reinterprets it for contemporary society.",
