This drawing is a study for the figure of Eugène Lamy, a close friend of the artist with whom he is seen in conversation in the 1893 painting Bank of the Seine at Petit Gennevilliers, Winter (private collection). Using sketchy, diagonal marks, Caillebotte recorded light and shadow on Lamy’s jacket, aligning with the Impressionists’ interest in capturing natural effects and fleeting moments from everyday life. wall description: Gustave Caillebotte used drawing to capture natural effects and fleeting moments of everyday life. This sheet presents a closely studied image of a friend at the property Caillebotte owned in Petit Gennevilliers, a wealthy Parisian suburb. Caillebotte used sketch-like diagonal marks to record light and shadow on the man’s jacket, later incorporating the portrait into a painting. Although an integral aspect of Caillebotte’s practice, his drawings are rare today and held by only a few American museums. Cleveland’s example was previously owned by Samuel Josefowitz—among the first collectors interested in Caillebotte—who built unprecedented holdings of the artist’s work beginning in the 1960s. --- RELATED WORKS --- CITATIONS Berhaut, Marie.
