wall description:
This embroidered folding screen once furnished an intimate bedroom space. From the first panel (far right) to the last, it renders a birthday banquet in honor of Guo Ziyi (697–781), who is considered one of the greatest military generals in East Asian history. Guo is known to have had a long and prosperous professional career as well as a blissful family life. The fifth panel portrays the senior Guo seated on a daybed surrounded by many of his grandchildren, watching a female entertainer’s whirling dance. This festive subject symbolizes the paragon of success and happiness; thus, it was often selected for a birthday or wedding gift.
